What to Expect on the Rumtse to Tso Moriri Trek

The Rumtse to Tso Moriri Lake Trek offers an opportunity to discover the remote landscapes and traditional culture of eastern Ladakh. The route passes through the Changthang Plateau, an expansive high-altitude region known for its open valleys, mountain passes, lakes and nomadic settlements.

The journey begins in Leh, where time is set aside for acclimatisation before travelling to Rumtse village to start the trek. From there, the trail continues through remote valleys and high mountain passes towards Tso Moriri Lake.

Tso Kar and Tso Moriri are among the highlights of this journey. Tso Kar is known for its salt-lake landscape and surrounding wetlands, while Tso Moriri is a beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by mountains. The wetlands and lakes of Changthang provide habitat for various birds and wildlife.

Depending on the season and local conditions, travellers may spot kiang (Tibetan wild ass), Himalayan marmots and other wildlife. The region is also known for its pashmina goats and traditional nomadic way of life.

This is a demanding high-altitude adventure rather than an easy walking holiday. Travellers should prepare for long trekking days, changing weather, limited facilities and the physical demands of crossing high mountain passes.

While exploring the remote landscapes of Ladakh, travellers may also want to discover the rich history and architectural beauty of other destinations in India. For those planning a short cultural getaway, the Same Day Agra Tour offers an opportunity to visit the iconic Taj Mahal and explore the historical attractions of Agra in a single day.
